Description

Sloppy Joe Biscuit Casserole: A comforting, crowd-pleasing dish made with ground beef, biscuit dough, and savory sloppy joe filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • pounds (680g) lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced (about 1 cup/160g)
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced (about 1 cup/150g)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz/425g) tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon (2.5ml) salt
  • ¼ teaspoon (1.25ml) black pepper
  • 1 cup (113g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tube (16.3 oz/462g) refrigerated biscuit dough (8 biscuits)
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) melted butter
  • ½ teaspoon (2.5ml) garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon (5g) fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Prepare Your Kitchen Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch (23x33cm) baking dish. Gather all ingredients and chop your vegetables before beginning to ensure a smooth cooking process for your Sloppy Joe Biscuit Casserole.
  2. Step 2: Create the Sloppy Joe Filling Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until no pink remains, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it into small crumbles as it cooks. Add the diced onion and green pepper to the beef and cook for another 3-4 minutes until vegetables begin to soften. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Step 3: Develop the Flavors Reduce heat to medium and add the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper to the meat mixture. Stir well to combine all ingredients. Allow the mixture to simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly and the flavors meld together. Your kitchen should now be filled with the mouthwatering aroma of classic sloppy joes!
  4. Step 4: Assemble the Casserole Transfer the sloppy joe mixture to your prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the meat mixture. Open the tube of refrigerated biscuits and slightly flatten each biscuit between your palms. Arrange them evenly over the cheese layer, leaving small gaps between each biscuit.
  5. Step 5: Add the Finishing Touch In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with garlic powder. Brush this mixture over each biscuit for extra flavor and that beautiful golden finish. If using, sprinkle the chopped parsley over the biscuits.
  6. Step 6: Bake to Perfection Bake your Sloppy Joe Biscuit Casserole in the preheated oven for 18-22 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through. The filling should be bubbling around the edges, signaling it’s hot throughout.
  7. Step 7: Serve and Enjoy Remove from the oven and let rest for 5-7 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly and prevents burning your mouth on the hot filling. Serve warm, ensuring each portion includes at least one biscuit and plenty of the savory sloppy joe mixture.

Notes

Fresh ingredients will always yield the best flavor results.
