Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb (454g) lean ground beef (80/20 recommended)
- 1/4 cup (60ml) soy sauce, low-sodium preferred
- 3 tablespoons (45g) brown sugar, packed
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) sesame oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 tablespoons)
- 1 tablespoon (15g) fresh ginger, grated
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
- 3 green onions, thinly sliced (white and green parts separated)
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) vegetable oil
- 3 cups (570g) cooked white rice, warm
- 1 tablespoon (9g) sesame seeds, for garnish
- Optional toppings: sliced cucumber, shredded carrots, kimchi, fried egg
Instructions
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add white parts of green onions, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Sauté for 30-45 seconds until fragrant.
- Add ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 4-5 minutes until no longer pink and slightly browned.
- While beef cooks, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes in a small bowl.
- Pour sauce mixture over the browned beef and stir to coat evenly. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 3-4 minutes until sauce thickens slightly.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed, adding more red pepper flakes for heat or brown sugar for sweetness.
- Serve over warm rice, garnished with green parts of onions and sesame seeds. Add optional toppings as desired.
- For a complete meal, add fresh vegetables like sliced cucumber, shredded carrots, or traditional kimchi on the side.
