Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (454g) lean ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) soy sauce, low-sodium preferred
  • 3 tablespoons (45g) brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) sesame oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1 tablespoon (15g) fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 3 green onions, thinly sliced (white and green parts separated)
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) vegetable oil
  • 3 cups (570g) cooked white rice, warm
  • 1 tablespoon (9g) sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Optional toppings: sliced cucumber, shredded carrots, kimchi, fried egg

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add white parts of green onions, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Sauté for 30-45 seconds until fragrant.
  2. Add ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 4-5 minutes until no longer pink and slightly browned.
  3. While beef cooks, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes in a small bowl.
  4. Pour sauce mixture over the browned beef and stir to coat evenly. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 3-4 minutes until sauce thickens slightly.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed, adding more red pepper flakes for heat or brown sugar for sweetness.
  6. Serve over warm rice, garnished with green parts of onions and sesame seeds. Add optional toppings as desired.
  7. For a complete meal, add fresh vegetables like sliced cucumber, shredded carrots, or traditional kimchi on the side.
