Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups (about 8 ounces) day-old bread, cut into ¾-inch cubes
  • ¼ cup (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 teaspoons)
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons finely grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and position a rack in the middle.
  2. Cut your bread into consistently sized ¾-inch cubes and place them in a large mixing bowl.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, olive oil, and minced garlic.
  4. Pour the butter-oil mixture over the bread cubes while tossing to ensure even coating.
  5. Sprinkle the dried herbs, salt, and pepper over the moistened bread, tossing until evenly distributed.
  6. Add Parmesan cheese if using and give everything one final gentle toss.
  7. Spread the seasoned bread cubes in a single layer on one or two rimmed baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes, then remove and flip the croutons with a spatula.
  9. Return to the oven for another 5-10 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  10. Allow to cool completely on the baking sheet before transferring to an airtight container.
  11. Store at room temperature for up to one week.
