Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 store-bought angel food cake (1012 ounces), cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 (3.4 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 3 cups cold milk
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
  • 1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • ¼ cup sliced almonds, toasted (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • Fresh cherries for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Prepare the Pudding Mixture In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until completely smooth and free of lumps, about 2 minutes. In a separate bowl, whisk together the instant vanilla pudding mix and cold milk for about 2 minutes until it begins to thicken. Pour the pudding mixture into the cream cheese and beat until fully combined and silky smooth. Fold in 1 cup of the whipped topping until just incorporated, being careful not to deflate the mixture. If using, add the almond extract now for an extra dimension of flavor.
  2. Step 2: Begin Layering Select a large trifle dish or clear glass bowl to showcase the beautiful layers of your Heaven On Earth Cake. Place half of the angel food cake cubes in an even layer at the bottom of the dish. Gently press down slightly, but don’t compress too much as you want to maintain some airiness. Spread half of the pudding mixture over the cake layer, ensuring it reaches all the way to the edges.
  3. Step 3: Add Cherry Layer and Repeat Spoon all of the cherry pie filling over the pudding layer, distributing it evenly. Add the remaining angel food cake cubes on top of the cherry layer. Follow with the remaining pudding mixture, spreading it smoothly with the back of a spoon. Top the entire dessert with the remaining whipped topping, creating decorative peaks and swirls if desired.
  4. Step 4: Garnish and Chill Sprinkle the toasted sliced almonds around the perimeter of the dessert for a beautiful presentation and textural contrast. If desired, place fresh cherries in the center for an elegant touch. Cover carefully with plastic wrap without touching the top layer and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the cake to soften slightly. This Heaven On Earth Cake is actually better the next day, making it perfect for preparing ahead of time.
