- ⅓ cup (40g) breadcrumbs, plain or Italian-style
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 small onion, finely diced (about ½ cup)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon mustard powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil for cooking
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 8 ounces (225g) mushrooms, sliced
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups (480ml) beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or ¼ teaspoon dried)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Step 1: Mix the patties In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, Worcestershire sauce, diced onion, minced garlic, mustard powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
- Step 2: Shape the patties Divide the mixture into 4-6 portions and shape into oval patties about ¾-inch thick. Press a slight indentation in the center of each patty.
- Step 3: Cook the patties Heat oil in a skillet, add the patties, and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- Step 4: Make the gravy In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté mushrooms, onions, and garlic. Sprinkle flour over the mixture, cook for 1 minute, then whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme.
- Step 5: Simmer the gravy Let the gravy simmer for 3-5 minutes to thicken, then season with salt and pepper.
- Step 6: Combine patties and gravy Return the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, cover, and simmer for 7-10 minutes until cooked through.
