Description

Dolly’s Chicken and Stuffing Casserole: A comforting and crowd-pleasing dish with tender chicken, savory stuffing, and a creamy sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds (900g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 can (10.5 oz/300g) condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 1 cup (240ml) sour cream
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 cups (240g) dry stuffing mix (herb-seasoned variety recommended)
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 cups (360ml) hot chicken broth
  • 1 cup (100g) diced celery
  • 1/2 cup (80g) diced onion

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Dice your chicken into uniform 1-inch pieces and set aside. Finely dice the celery and onion. Having everything prepped before you begin assembly makes the process much smoother.
  2. Step 2: Create the Creamy Chicken Base In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the condensed soup, sour cream, 1/4 cup chicken broth, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, salt, and pepper until well combined. Gently fold in your diced chicken pieces until they’re fully coated in this creamy mixture. The sauce will seem thick, but it will thin slightly as the chicken releases juices during cooking.
  3. Step 3: Prepare the Stuffing In a separate large bowl, combine the dry stuffing mix with diced celery and onion. Pour the melted butter over the mixture, tossing gently to coat the bread cubes. Add the hot chicken broth gradually while stirring, allowing the stuffing to absorb the liquid. Let it stand for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork.
  4. Step 4: Layer Your Casserole Spread the chicken mixture evenly across the bottom of your prepared baking dish, creating a level base. Top with the prepared stuffing, spreading it to cover the chicken layer completely. Press down gently on the stuffing layer, but don’t compact it too firmly—you want some texture.
  5. Step 5: Bake to Perfection Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in your preheated oven for 30 minutes. Then remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes until the stuffing top becomes golden brown and crispy, and the chicken reads 165°F (74°C) on an instant-read thermometer. Let the Dolly’s Chicken and Stuffing Casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to set slightly.
