Description

Crock-Pot French Toast: Easy breakfast favorite made with bread, eggs, milk, and cinnamon in a slow cooker. Comforting and delicious!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (16 oz/450g) day-old bread (French bread, brioche, or challah work best), cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups (480ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup (67g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) pure maple syrup, plus more for serving
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Prepare Your Slow Cooker Thoroughly grease your 6-quart slow cooker with butter or non-stick spray. For easier removal and cleanup, consider lining the insert with parchment paper, leaving some overhang on the sides to serve as handles. This step ensures your Crock-Pot French Toast won’t stick and maintains its beautiful shape when served.
  2. Step 2: Prepare the Bread Cube your day-old bread into approximately 1-inch pieces. If your bread is still fresh, spread the cubes on a baking sheet and bake at 200°F (93°C) for about 10 minutes to slightly dry them out. Place all bread cubes in a large mixing bowl, ensuring they’re roughly the same size for even cooking.
  3. Step 3: Create the Custard Mixture In a separate bowl, vigorously whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until completely smooth. The mixture should be well-blended with no visible egg streaks. Pour the melted butter into the mixture and whisk again to incorporate.
  4. Step 4: Combine and Soak Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes, gently folding with a spatula until all pieces are evenly coated. Allow this mixture to rest for at least 30 minutes, occasionally pressing down gently to help the bread absorb the custard. For a more developed flavor, cover and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Step 5: Transfer and Cook Pour the soaked bread mixture into your prepared slow cooker, spreading it evenly. Place a clean kitchen towel over the top of the slow cooker (not touching the mixture) before putting on the lid—this will absorb condensation and prevent soggy spots. Cook on low for 2.5-3 hours until the center is set but still moist and the edges are golden brown.
  6. Step 6: Serve and Enjoy Allow your Crock-Pot French Toast to cool for 10-15 minutes before serving. This resting period helps it set up properly for cleaner portions. Serve warm with additional maple syrup, fresh berries, a dusting of powdered sugar, or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra-special breakfast experience.
