- 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- ⅔ cup (135g) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
- 2¼ cups (280g) all-purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- Food coloring (red, green, or colors of choice)
- Sprinkles, colored sugar, or nonpareils for decorating
- Optional: ¼ cup finely chopped nuts or ½ cup mini chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare cookie press with desired disc design. Do not grease baking sheets.
- Beat butter until creamy, then add sugar and beat until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
- Add egg and beat until incorporated, then mix in vanilla and almond extract if using.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Gradually add to butter mixture, mixing just until combined.
- Divide dough if using multiple colors, then add food coloring and mix until evenly distributed.
- Fill cookie press with dough and press cookies onto ungreased baking sheets, spacing about 1.5 inches apart.
- Add sprinkles or decorations if desired before baking.
- Bake for 6-8 minutes until set but not browned.
- Allow to cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
- Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.
