Description
Cheesy Sausage Potatoes: A comforting and crowd-pleasing dish made with sausage, potatoes, and gooey cheese. Quick and easy to make!
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds (900g) russet potatoes, cut into ½-inch cubes
- 1 pound (450g) pork sausage (breakfast or Italian work well)
- 1 medium onion, diced (about 1 cup)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups (200g) shredded cheddar cheese, divided
- 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
- ½ cup (120ml) chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon paprika (smoked or sweet)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 green onions, thinly sliced (for garnish)
Instructions
- Step 1: Prepare The Ingredients Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Place cubed potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add 1 teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes until potatoes are partially cooked but still firm. Drain thoroughly and set aside.
- Step 2: Cook The Sausage Mixture Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sausage, breaking it into crumbles with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Add the diced onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant. Remove from heat and drain excess fat if necessary.
- Step 3: Create The Cream Mixture In a medium bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, chicken broth, melted butter, dried thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper until well combined. This creamy mixture will become the luxurious sauce that binds the Cheesy Sausage Potatoes together.
- Step 4: Layer The Casserole Spread a small amount of the cream mixture on the bottom of your greased baking dish. Add half of the parboiled potatoes in an even layer. Top with half of the sausage mixture, then pour half of the remaining cream mixture over the layers. Sprinkle with 1 cup of shredded cheese. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, sausage mixture, cream mixture, and finish with the remaining cheese on top.
- Step 5: Bake To Perfection Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes until the potatoes are tender, the sauce is bubbly, and the top is golden brown and crispy. If you want an extra-golden top, you can broil for 1-2 minutes at the end, watching carefully to prevent burning.
- Step 6: Finish And Serve Remove the Cheesy Sausage Potatoes from the oven and let stand for 10-15 minutes before serving. This resting period is essential for the sauce to thicken to the perfect consistency. Sprinkle with sliced green onions just before serving for a fresh finish that complements the rich, creamy casserole.
