4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 2 lbs/900g)
2 cups (16 oz/475ml) marinara sauce
8 oz (225g) fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
1/2 cup (2 oz/55g) grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Fresh basil leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Mix Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, garlic, and olive oil in a small bowl.
- Check chicken breasts for even thickness and pound if necessary to about 3/4 inch thickness. Pat dry with paper towels.
- Rub the seasoning paste evenly over both sides of each chicken breast.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear seasoned chicken for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Spread 1/2 cup marinara sauce in the bottom of the baking dish. Arrange seared chicken on top with space between pieces.
- Pour remaining marinara sauce over and around the chicken breasts.
- Layer mozzarella slices over each chicken breast and sprinkle Parmesan cheese across the entire dish.
- Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes until chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) and cheese is bubbly. Broil for the final 2-3 minutes if you want a more golden top.
- Remove from oven, let rest for 5-7 minutes, and garnish with fresh torn basil leaves before serving.
