Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf French bread or Italian bread (about 16–18 inches long)
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio works best)
- 1 small onion, finely diced (about 1 cup)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon mustard powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cloves garlic, minced (for garlic butter)
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Optional toppings: pickle chips, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, bacon bits
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice bread loaf horizontally down the middle to create two long halves and place cut-side up on a baking sheet.
- Combine softened butter, minced garlic (for garlic butter), and parsley in a small bowl. Spread mixture evenly across both bread halves.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook for 2-3 minutes undisturbed, then break up and continue cooking until mostly browned.
- Add diced onion and minced garlic to the beef. Cook for 3-4 minutes until onions have softened and beef is fully browned.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, salt, and pepper to the beef mixture. Stir well and cook for another minute. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Sprinkle 1/4 of the cheese directly onto the buttered bread halves. Distribute the beef mixture evenly across both halves, then top with remaining cheese.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes until cheese is melted. For a golden finish, broil for the final 1-2 minutes, watching carefully.
- Let cool for 2-3 minutes, add any optional toppings, then slice into 2-inch portions for serving.
