Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb smoked sausage or kielbasa, sliced into rounds
- 1 medium head of cabbage, shredded or chopped
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (or more, depending on your preference)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon paprika (optional)
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or mustard (optional, for tanginess)
- 1 cup chicken broth (optional, for added flavor)
Instructions
- Brown the sausage: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the sliced sausage and cook until browned and crispy on both sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the sausage and set it aside.
- Cook the onions and garlic: In the same skillet, add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 2-3 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Add the cabbage: Stir in the shredded cabbage and cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. The cabbage will begin to soften and shrink in size.
- Season the dish: Add salt, pepper, and paprika to the cabbage and stir well. Return the sausage to the skillet and mix it in.
- Simmer: Add the chicken broth (if using) and cover the skillet. Reduce the heat to low and let everything simmer for about 10-15 minutes, until the cabbage is tender but still has a bit of texture. If using vinegar or mustard, add it toward the end of cooking for a tangy finish.
- Serve: Once the cabbage is tender and the sausage is heated through, serve the dish hot. You can garnish with fresh herbs or serve it alongside crusty bread for a complete meal.
