Description

Best Thanksgiving Stuffing: Savory sage, hearty sausage, and crunchy walnuts baked to perfection. A crowd-pleasing comfort dish you’ll crave!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) day-old bread (a mix of white and wheat bread works wonderfully)
  • 3/4 cup (170g) unsalted butter
  • 2 cups (300g) yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 1/2 cups (200g) celery, finely diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup (15g) fresh sage, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves
  • 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, chopped
  • 1/4 cup (15g) fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 to 3 cups (480-720ml) chicken or turkey stock
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Prepare the Bread Cut bread into 1-inch cubes and spread them in a single layer on baking sheets. Bake at 250°F for 45-60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until dried but not browned. Transfer to a very large mixing bowl. This can be done up to 3 days ahead – simply store the dried bread in an airtight container.
  2. Step 2: Prepare the Aromatics In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter until it begins to foam. Add the diced onions and celery with a pinch of salt. Cook for 7-8 minutes until vegetables are soft and translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Your kitchen should now be filled with the irresistible aroma of the foundation for perfect Best Thanksgiving Stuffing.
  3. Step 3: Add Herbs and Combine Add the fresh herbs to the skillet and stir to combine. The heat will help release their essential oils, creating an intensely aromatic mixture. Cook for just 1 minute, then remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes. This cooling period is crucial for the next step.
  4. Step 4: Create the Mixture Pour the cooled vegetable and herb mixture over the dried bread cubes. Add 1 1/2 cups of stock, salt, and pepper, then fold everything together gently. Add the beaten eggs and fold again. Now, gradually add more stock, folding after each addition, until the bread is evenly moistened but not soggy. You might not need all the stock.
  5. Step 5: Bake Preheat your oven to 350°F. Transfer the stuffing to a buttered 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes until the top is golden brown and crispy. Let your Best Thanksgiving Stuffing rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to settle and the texture to set perfectly.
