Apple Crumble Recipe

Description

The humble apple crumble gets a major upgrade! Perfectly spiced, juicy apples tucked under a buttery, crisp topping that will make you forget all about pie.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large apples (about 2.5 lbs), preferably a mix of tart and sweet varieties
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or deep 9-inch pie plate.
  2. Peel, core, and slice apples into 1/4-inch thick slices. Place in a large mixing bowl and toss with lemon juice.
  3. In a small bowl, combine 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Sprinkle over apples and toss until evenly coated.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup flour, brown sugar, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add cold butter cubes and work into dry ingredients using fingertips until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in oats.
  5. Transfer apple mixture to prepared baking dish. Sprinkle crumble topping evenly over apples.
  6. Place dish on a baking sheet and bake for 45-50 minutes, until topping is golden brown and filling is bubbling around edges.
  7. Allow to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
